Ducks Week in Review – 10/18/2016

Ducks Split Weekend Series with Cincinnati Thunder

This past weekend the Point Mallard Ducks traveled to Ohio to take on the Mid-West divisions Cincinnati Thunder. In the first game on Saturday night, the Ducks came out flying as they built up a 2-0 first period lead on goals by Elias Nilsson and Matt Goodman. The Ducks outshot the Thunder 11-8 in the period. The second period was a different story as the Thunder took over physically and began to control the pace of the game. “We had a very strong first period, playing to our strengths but we got away from that in the second period. We let them gain momentum through their physical play,” stated Ducks GM/Head Coach Tom Winkler. The Thunder cut the deficit to 2-1 halfway through the period. In the third period the Ducks regained their composure and Joe Polcaro gave the Ducks their 2 goal lead back. “It was great to see us rebound and get that goal, it was a hard working goal by that line (Polcaro, Michael Dlugach, and Nicholas Gustafson). We played a pretty solid third period,” said Winkler. Sam Gartner recorded his first win with 29 saves on 30 shots.

On Saturday the Ducks lack of overall discipline hurt them, they surrendered two power play goals and had several turnovers that kept them from establishing any momentum. “We did some good things but our penalties and our penalty kill were not where we need it to be. Lazy penalties and penalties after the whistle always seem to be the ones that you don’t kill off, and we didn’t. Give credit to Cincy, they dictated the physical play and pace and we just didn’t seem to match them,” stated Winkler. The Thunder led 1-0 until Brandon Knopf notched a power play goal mid-way through the third period, but The Thunder answered with a power play of their own and then got another goal two minutes later to take the commanding 3-1 lead. “We learned a few things about ourselves this weekend that we need to improve upon, we have got to stop beating ourselves,” said Winkler.

The Ducks return to the road this weekend against the Atlanta Capitals, game times are Friday 6:00pm (Eastern) and Saturday 7:00pm (Eastern) and game are available on FastHockey.com.
