Ducks soar on Draft Day
On Tuesday,June 10th the Point Mallard Ducks participated in their first major event as an organization, the 2014 NA3HL draft. The Ducks joined the 30 other teams in the NA3HL to select junior hockey players in the same way NFL teams do, with a 3 minute draft clock and trades contributing to an already tense situation.
After the draft Ducks’ GM Ryan McCormack had this to say about the experience:
“Going in to the draft we felt pretty good despite it being our first experience, and we got tremendous support from the TPH family. When it was done we believe the Ducks drafted some terrific young student-athletes that are going to fit in well in Decatur”
Heading into the draft, Head Coach Craig Bushey discussed the criteria by which prospective players would be judged.
“Most importantly, the Ducks are an organization focused on the process of development. Character and academics play a huge role in determining what players the Ducks will try to bring to Decatur.”
The night before the draft, McCormack and the Ducks made a blockbuster trade that gave Point Mallard 4 additional draft picks, including the second pick overall and 4 of the first 33 picks in the draft.
With these picks the Ducks selected, in order, Justin Delisle (Defense, St. Sault Marie HS), Dominic Norris (Forward, Frederick Freeze AAA), Tyler Riter (Forward, West Seneca AAA) and Ryan Meyer (Forward, WSHL). Also drafted was local standout Phil Zbell (TPH Thunder AAA)
If the draft was any indication, Decatur fans will get more than their money’s worth in excitement when the season opens in Point Mallard competing in the NA3HL and playing out of the Point Mallard Ice Complex. Decatur, here come the Ducks, your new hometown junior ‘A’ hockey team. The NA3HL is a Junior A hockey league with teams throughout the south and Midwest.
