The Point Mallard Ducks continued their 2016-2017 campaign last weekend at the Point Mallard Ice Plex against the Atlanta Capitals. The Ducks dropped both games by scores of 5-1 and 4-1.
“We expect to win, so these results on our home ice are not acceptable. Take nothing away from Atlanta, they did a fantastic job of capitalizing on our mistakes. We can’t turn the puck over and give a veteran team that many odd-man rushes. They bury their chances,” stated Ducks GM/Head Coach Tom Winkler. While those errors led to several Atlanta goals, Winkler did not fault his teams work ethic or its compete level. Experience gained by his troops will prove beneficial as the year goes on. “We did battle all weekend and we played right up to the final buzzer in both games, this has to be a turning point type of weekend. The season is still young but we have to take away better puck management, we did generate several quality scoring chances but we did not bury them. Again, it is pretty frustrating for all of us, but we are in this together and we will learn and continue to improve our game,” stated Winkler. Areas of improvement that Winkler and Assistant Coach Tim Flynn expect to see are focused on the power play and their defensive zone coverage.
The Ducks game on Friday, September 30th has been re-scheduled, new date will be announced shortly. The Ducks will be in Nashville on Saturday, October 1st to take on the Jr. Preds at the Ford Ice Zone. Puck drop is 8:00pm.
